  • Notes: This octagonal plate is from the celebrated Sims service, one of the most iconic Chinese export porcelain services made for the American market in the first years of the nineteenth century. The central design depicts a memorial inscribed WASHINGTON, with a spread-winged eagle above and a willow tree nearby, all standard devices of mourning that would have been immediately legible to an American audience familiar with memorial prints, mourning embroideries, and commemorative objects following George Washington's death on December 14, 1799.

Although the exact source for the porcelain design has not been identified, it belongs to the same visual culture as James Akin's memorial engraving of Washington, issued within weeks of Washington's death and widely circulated. The design reflects the national mourning that followed Washington's passing, translating the language of American memorial art into Chinese export porcelain for a Philadelphia patron.

The service was made for Joseph Sims, a China trader, and his wife Rebecca, of Philadelphia, whose initials JRS appear in the oval reserve at the top of the plate. The identification of the monogram long puzzled scholars, and earlier publications variously read it as JRL or otherwise misattributed the service to figures including John R. Latimer or Judith and Robert Lewis. The Sims attribution was later established through a handwritten provenance note accompanying three examples of the service donated to Kenmore, the Fredericksburg house museum associated with Washington's family.

A closely related octagonal plate in the Metropolitan Museum of Art was published by Clare Le Corbeiller in China Trade Porcelain: Patterns of Exchange, pp. 118–119, cat. no. 50, and appears to be the only other published octagonal plate from the service. Other recorded forms include rectangular platters, a tureen cover, jardinière, sauce tureen, pots de crème, coffee can, octagonal hot-water dish, and oval platter. Many surviving forms appear to be unique or known in only very small numbers, underscoring the rarity of this service and the exceptional importance of the present plate.
