Highly Important and Exceptional Chinese Export American Market Monogrammed Pseudo-Society of Cincinnati Plate

ca. 1795-1800; depicting a Pseudo-Society of Cincinnati design with a personification of the angel Fame in the form of a cherub with trumpet above an eagle; bearing the monogram NEA; decorated with gilt and a cobalt blue interlaced border with stars; diameter: 6 1/8 in.

    This plate depicts the American Eagle, taken from an early version of the Great Seal of the United States, along with an image of the angel Fame and her trumpet floating above it. Fame, of course, being best known for her appearance on the much sought-after Order of Cincinnati service ordered for George Washington, a plate of which is offered elsewhere in the sale. Here, the elements are successfully used together in this charming piece, boasting of its pride in the new American Republic.
