HANS WEGNER VALET CHAIR; Johannes Hansen, cabinetmaker, Copenhagen, Denmark, c. 1958
of teak, oak, and brass; the shaped crest and backsplat with hinged seat opening to reveal storage compartment raised on three tapered legs, branded cabinetmaker's mark under seat, height: 37 1/2 in., width: 20 in., depth: 21 in.

Provenance: A Cohasset, Massachusetts Estate.

Other Notes: Hans Wegner (1914-2007) was a master of 20th century Danish Modern Design and was instrumental in developing a body of work known as "organic functionalism." He trained in both carpentry and architecure and, upon establishing his own furniture studio in the 1940s, he collaborated with the cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen to realize his chair designs. The idea for his Valet chair came about in 1951, as a result of a conversation with Danish architect Steen Eiler Rasmussen and designer Kay Bojesen concerning the difficulty of folding ones clothes at the end of the day. The back of the chair works as a hanger for a jacket, the seat is hinged and can be placed in an upright position so that the trousers can be neatly folded, and underneath the seat is a box for keys, wallet, and other pocket items. The Danish King Frederick IX was the first recipient of the Wegner Valet Chair, which originally had four legs, but was ultimately re-designed by Wegner to be a three-legged chair. The Danish King ended up ordering a total of ten Valet Chairs.

  • Condition: some surface nicks and scratches to seat; the back "jacket hanger" area has a slight separation to wood; hinges are good; leather worn and stained but intact; legs all good
