Other Notes: Grafton Tyler Brown was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1841 to a family of recently freed slaves. He moved west to California in the late 1850s/early 1860s, and soon found work as a lithographer. During his time in California, he travelled extensively, drawing and painting the landscapes he encountered. His works of Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks are of particular note. Brown is often celebrated as the first African-American artist to paint views of the West.


  • Condition: Condition: Minor surface abraisons resulting in two small (approx. 1/4 in. each) areas of paint loss; considerable surface dirt and grime.
