GERRIT ALBERTUS BENEKER
(American, 1882-1934)
An Autumn Afternoon - Truro
1922, oil on board
signed Gerrit A. Beneker, l.l.; inscribed with title and date, verso
8 1/21 x 10 1/4 in., frame: 15 x 17 in.

Other Notes: Gerrit Beneker is perhaps best known for his scenes of industrial life in 1920s America. At various points throughout his career, he was the artist in residence for companies such as General Electric and Cleveland's Hydraulic Pressed Steel Company. However, he also spent summers in Truro, on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he studied under Charles Webster Hawthorne at the Cape Cod School of Art and ultimately was a founding member of the Provincetown Art Association. These summers in Truro gave rise to Beneker's impressionistic style, with a brighter palette and looser brushwork, a style that can generally be found in his views of the Cape Cod landscape.

  • Condition: Scattered inpainting throughout sky, mainly in upper left quadrant.
