Fritz Winter, a German artist who championed improvisation and gestural techniques in his canvases, was an integral part of the Art Informel movement in post-war Europe. He studied at the Bauhaus under Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, and others from 1927-30, and by the mid-1930s was listed as a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime. In 1939, he was drafted into the German Army, and was ultimately detained in Siberia as a prisoner of war by the Russian Army. Winter returned to Europe after the war and embraced the prevailing avant-garde trends. His colorful, organic, and almost calligraphic technique, offered an antidote to the horrors of war he witnessed and made him one of the most celebrated German abstract painters of the 1950s.
  • Condition: Canvas stiff and warped, with stable cracking in some areas of white paint. The work is not as brown/yellow in tone as it appears in many of the online images.
