ENGLISH SCHOOL (early 19th century) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN oil on canvas;

  • Condition: This painting has evidence of early restoration in shrinkage cracks visible by raking light, not U.V.; U.V. does not show any evidence of in-painting, however, the canvas is clearly laid down (lined) and possibly restored along the top edge, possible that there is masking varnish; the bottom right has surface grime, likely not old restoration, just needs to be cleaned. The painting appears thin, it may have been slightly skinned on earlier restoration. Frame is gilt gesso and has several small losses.
