Biographical Note: John Ross was born in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland, on 29 January 1729. He later moved to Perth, Scotland, and entered mercantile pursuits at a young age. In 1763, he emigrated to the American colonies, settling in Philadelphia, where he established himself as a shipping merchant. At the outbreak of tensions with Great Britain, he supported the colonial cause and signed the Philadelphia non-importation agreement of 1765. In May 1776, he was engaged by the Continental Congress's Committee of Commerce to procure clothing, arms, and powder for the Continental Army. He was acquainted with George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Robert Morris. Washington's diary records several visits to dine with Ross at his country seat, "The Grange," during the period of the Constitutional Convention. The estate was so named in reference to Lafayette's home in France.
