Chinese Export American Market Plate from the service of Benjamin Chew, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lifelong friend of George Washington

ca. 1795-1800; bearing a central eight-pointed star inscribed C; decorated with sepia and gilt trellis border with a spearhead trim; diameter: 7 3/4 in.

  • Notes: The Chew family were prominent participants in the civic and legal life of Philadelphia, with members serving as lawyers, judges, and officeholders during the colonial period, the American Revolution, and the early republic. They also became closely associated with mercantile activity, including participation in the China trade in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The dishes of the service from which this plate originated is associated with family use at Cliveden, the Chew family estate near Philadelphia. Benjamin Chew (1722–1810) was a prominent American lawyer and jurist who served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Province of Pennsylvania and later of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Born into a Quaker family, he was noted for the clarity and concision of his legal reasoning, as well as his deep knowledge of statutory law and commitment to Constitutional principle. Chew maintained longstanding personal relationships with leading figures of the Revolutionary era, including George Washington, and was widely respected across political divisions.
