Chinese Export American Market Armorial Platter from the service of Christopher Gore, Boston, Massachusetts, who likely ordered the identical set for Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the United States

ca. 1785-1790; bearing a neoclassical shield studded with gold stars inscribed G surmounted by a plumed knight's helmet; decorated with cobalt blue underglazed trellis border with a spearhead trim; belonging to Governor of Massachusetts Christopher Gore (1758-1827); length: 8 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: From a private Lincoln, Rhode Island collection.
  • Literature: For a similar example, see Schiffer, H., P., and N., China for America, Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th Centuries, Atglen: 1997, p. 72.
  • Notes: The crest on this platter is remarkably similar to that on Thomas Jefferson's service. The present lot comes from a service belonging to Massachusetts Governor Christopher Gore, and scholars posit that the wealthy Gore and his wife may have special-ordered both their own service as well as the service for Jefferson. Christopher Gore (September 21, 1758 – March 1, 1827) was a prominent Massachusetts lawyer, Federalist politician, and United States diplomat. Born into a Loyalist-leaning family during the American Revolution, he ultimately supported the Patriot cause. He established a successful legal practice in Boston and amassed a substantial fortune through speculation in Revolutionary War debt securities, purchasing them at discounted rates and later realizing their full value when redeemed by the government.
  • Condition: major central enamel loss
