AUGUSTE RODIN
(French, 1840-1917)
PETITE TETE DE DANSEUSE (HANAKO)
bronze
signed A. Rodin; #4 of 12; Musée Rodin inv. no. 894
2 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. (approx. 4 in. tall with base)

Provenance: Musée Rodin, Paris, France; Mildred & Herbert Lee Collection, Boston, Massachusetts (acquired from above in 1959); Lee Gallery, Belmont, Massachusetts; Private Massachusetts Collection (acquired from above in 1973), by descent in the family.

Other Notes: Rodin was introduced to the Japanese actress and dancer Ohta Hisa (1868–1945), known as Hanako, in 1906. Captivated by her beauty, Rodin created a series of sculptures and drawings of the actress from 1907 to 1911. This bronze was likely modeled as part of that series.
This bronze is accompanied by various documentation, including a Certificat d'Origine from the Musée Rodin dated October 12, 1958.

  • Condition: overall good condition; minor chips along edges of base; no major condition issues to report on bronze.
