After beginning his formal artistic education at the American Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, Arthur Grover Rider moved to Europe, continuing his training in London and in Paris. Perhaps most significant in his artistic development were the nine summers he spent painting on the coast of Spain, as it was there that he met and befriended the lauded Spanish impressionist Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923), and the two painted together until Sorolla's death. The present work strongly echoes Sorolla in subject matter, composition, and technique, with bold color, loose brushstrokes, and intriguing perspective all coming together to draw the viewer's eye to the work.
