ALEXANDER CALDER
(American, 1898-1976)
UNTITLED NECKLACE
silver
composed of silver wire links suspending hammered silver scrolls in the form of stylized musical notes
scroll length: 5/8 to 3/4 in.; necklace length: 18 in.

Provenance: Gift of the artist to his great-niece, Nanette Calder Hayes Sexton (1943-2015); Bequest of Nanette Calder Hayes Sexton to her friend, Private Collection, Brookline, Massachusetts.

Other Notes: While most renowned for his sculptures and mobiles, Alexander Calder was a highly celebrated and sought after jeweler who frequently gifted pieces to his nearest and dearest, among them this necklace which he made for his great-niece, Nanette Calder Hayes Sexton (1943-2015). Nanette, named for her great grandmother, Nanette Lederer Calder, was born in Berkeley, California and grew up next door to her grandmother, Margaret 'Peggy' Calder Hayes, Calder's sister. 'Uncle Sandy', as Calder was affectionately called by his great-niece, visited frequently. The two enjoyed a close bond, revolving around Calder's artwork and Nan's deep reverence and appreciation thereof. Over the years, Calder gifted Nan numerous works of art, often personalized with dedications or designed with Nan in mind. This necklace, among Nan's most treasured gifts from Uncle Sandy, was left by Nan to her dear friend upon her death in February of 2015. We are delighted to offer this one-of-a-kind and deeply personal creation by Calder in The December Auction.
