TSCHEBULL RUG AUCTION A SUCCESS

On Monday evening, May 5th, we sold a wonderful collection of rugs from the Tschebull Antique Carpet Collection.   I became aware of the legendary rug author and scholar, Mike Tschebull, in 1978 while trying to comprehend the seemingly complex world of oriental rugs. As a junior cataloguer in Sotheby's rug department, I committed to memory his seminal book on Kazak rugs written in 1971.

As a husband and wife team, Mike and Inge personally inspected each purchase to be sure it met their exacting standards and took pride and pleasure in working directly with their clientele. Their objective was not turnover and quantity, but rather personalized service to discerning buyers.

The highlight of the collection, comprised of approximately 200 rugs and carpets, was a Fine 19th century Serapi Carpet measuring 11’3” x 8’8” and was estimated to bring $12,000-15,000.  The carpet attracted a flurry of activity from the phones and the floor before settling at $18,975 (shown left).  The second highest price was also achieved by a Serapi Carpet (shown above).   Slightly larger at 13’6” x 10’4”, the ca. 1900 carpet was estimated at $10,000-15,000, and achieved $16,100.

A 12’ 8” x 9’8” Heriz Carpet, ca. 1910, exceeded it’s $4,000-6,000 estimated to bring the third highest price of $11,212.50 (shown left), however, the surprise of the sale came when a Chinese Pillar Rug, ca. 1900, sold for $6,325, well above it’s $1,500-2,000 pre-sale estimate (shown right).

“We had many homeowners and private collectors attend the sale,” commented Michael Grogan, President of Grogan & Company,  “The Tschebull’s discriminating eye for quality and color made this selection of carpets perfect for retail buyers.”

In addition to a three-day preview,  clients attended a Gallery Talk and Reception with Mike Tschebull and Michael Grogan on Sunday afternoon.  Both experts answered questions about collecting and proper care for antique rugs and were available to answer questions about individual lots.

Mike and Inge are ready for the next chapter in their lives and while it will continue to include rugs, it will not be anchored in a retail rug shop.  We wish them the best.
