THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY AUCTION
GROSSES OVER 2.5 MILLION

Dedham, MA – Grogan & Company celebrated our 20th Anniversary on March 1st and 2nd in high style with a two day Auction which featured an impressive selection of Fine Art, Decorations and Couture from the estate of D.D. Ryan in Session I and American and European Fine Art, 18th and 19th century Decorative Works of Art, Furniture, Silver, Jewelry and Oriental Rugs from several prominent estates and collections in Session II.   “We achieved over 2.5 million, our highest grossing sale to date,” commented founder Michael Grogan, “I’d like to thank my colleagues and all our wonderful clients for making the 20th Anniversary not just a sale, but a celebration.”

Session I was devoted entirely to Property from the Estate of D.D. Ryan, the fashionable and well-known New York socialite.  The top lot was an oil on canvas by Alex Katz titled Tiger Lilies, which sold for $106,375, within it’s $100,000-150,000 presale estimate.  Pablo Picasso’s Francios, a lithograph estimated at $30,000-50,000, sold for $57,500 and Andy Warhol’s Dollar Sign, a color serigraph brought $43,125, well above it’s $15,000-20,000 estimate.   Two surprises of the sale included abstract paintings, one by Japanese artist Masaaki Kusumoto, which sold for $12,650, to a phone bidder, well above it’s $500-700 presale estimate; and the other, an oil by Larry Zox, which sold for $16,100 against a $1,000-1,500 estimate.

Competitive bidding by overseas collectors and internet buyers helped Ryan’s  large collection of decorative items achieve strong prices.  A Pair of Silver Mounted Chagrin Perfume Boxes sold over the phone for $27,600 against a $5,000-7,000 estimate  and a Set of Four Impressive Gold and Bloodstone Seals,  exceeded their $15,000-20,000 estimate to sell for $23,000.   A Tiffany Studios  ‘Nautilus Shell’ Desk   Lamp, estimated at $5,000-7,000, soared to $18,400 and a Set of 9 Leather bound volumes of Gazette du Bon Ton, achieved $20,700 against a $10,000-15,000 estimate.  The top lot from her snuffbox collection was a Georgian Silver Mounted Tortoise Shell example, which exceeded its $800-1,200 estimate to sell for $4,877;  a Pair of Victorian Silver and Tortoise Shell Footed Card Dishes also exceeded their $500-700 estimate to sell for $4,888; and Three Millefiore Paperweights sold for $5,750, against a $300-500 estimate.

The session ended with D.D. Ryan’s personal collection of Couture and Accessories.   D.D. Ryan, described  as “a fashion original whose inventiveness was an inspiration to many of America’s top designers”,  had a large collection of Costume Jewelry which sold for surprisingly high prices.  The 42 lots sold over estimate for a combined total of over $60,835 and featured a Miriam Haskell Necklace and Earring Set, which sold for $3,738 against a $400-600 estimate and Two Chanel Brooches, which sold for $2,300, against a $200-300 estimate.  The designor clothing also did very well, with the 87 lots bringing in over $49,000.  Highlights included Two Zandra Rhodes Coats, which sold for $3,450 (pre-sale estimate $400-600) and a Four Piece Beaded Halston Ensemble, which sold for $3,738 to a New York Institution.

The highlight of Session II was Sunlit Basket of Spring Flowers by Boston painter, Abbott Fuller Graves.  The painting sold to a gentleman in the room for  $109,250 (pre sale estimate: $100,000-150,000).  The second highest price in this session, $97,750, was achieved  by Maxfield Parrish’s Sheep Pasture, an oil on board from the Estate of Byzantine Scholar Carrol Wales (pre-sale estimate $70,000-10,000); and coming in at the third highest price was The Pond Cover, by Aiden Lassell Ripley, which brought $80,500 (pre-sale estimate $40,000-60,000).

Furniture and Decorative Works of Art highlights included a Fine Louis XV style Coiffeuse from a Rhode Island collector, which brought the highest furniture price at $35,650 (pre-sale estimate $20,000-40,000) and a Tiffany & Co. Carved Marble Ormolu Mounted Mantle Clock, which sold over the phone for $26,450 (pre-sale estimate: $10,000-15,000).

Yellow Leg, a bird carving by A. Elmer Crowell achieved a respectable $24,150 (estimate: 15,000-25,000), but it was an Eighteen Karat Yellow Gold and Diamond Bar Pin, estimated at $3,000-5,000, that drew audience applause when phone bidders drove the price to $25,300.  An E. Howard Gallery Clock, estimated at $2,000-4,000, also surprised the audience when it soared to $25,300.   The top rug lot, a 15’ x 10’10” Serapi  Carpet, sold for $17,250 against a $10,000-15,000 estimate.
