FINE ORIENTAL RUGS AND CARPETS
2008
Sale #112
Dedham, MA – On Monday
evening, December 10th, after a five-day exhibition, Grogan &
Company Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers conducted their Fine
Oriental Rug and Carpet Auction with a prominent crowd of rug
enthusiasts in attendance. The sale was comprised of 163 fine rugs and
carpets from local estates and collections and drew International
attention, grossing over 1.2 million dollars in sales.
Three carpets shared the spotlight for
the highest prices achieved, selling to European collectors for $80,500
each.
The
first to sell was a Fine and Important 19th century Caucasian
Yellow Ground Prayer Rug. The 4 foot 5 inch x 3 foot 8 inch rug was
estimated to bring $20,000-40,000 and sparked a flurry of activity from
the phones. Two lots later, the cover lot, a Rare two hundred year old
Persian Garden Carpet (pre-sale estimate $30,000-50,000), from the
renowned collection of the late Byzantine Art scholar, Carroll Wales
drew competitive bidding between the room and the phone, finally selling
to a gentleman in the room. Next, a Fine and
Impressive
Blue Ground Shirvan Rug, a late addition to the sale, exceeded its
$20,000-40,000 estimate, selling to another collector in the room.
Some of the smaller rug highlights
included a Rare Turkoman Trapping that generated a lot of pre-sale
interest and sold for $8,625, exceeding it’s $2,000-4,000 estimate and a
Rare Soumac Bag Face that soared beyond it’s $10,000-15,000 estimate to
sell for $23,000. In addition to two of the three top lots, mid size
rugs also featured an Impressive Bakshaish Rug, 7 feet x 5 feet 10
inches, which sold for $26,450 against a $10,000-20,000 estimate. The
only European example in the sale, a Rare Persian style Needlework
Textile, far exceeded its $3,000-5,000 estimate when it sold to a phone
bidder for $17,250.
The highlight of the room size carpet
offerings wa
s
a12 foot 9 inch x 10 foot Mohtasham Kashan Garden Carpet. Described
in the catalogue as a
“magnificent tour-de-force of high style Persian weaving”, the carpet
didn’t disappoint when it achieved the second highest price of the sale
at $48,875 to a European phone
bidder. A Chinese Silk and Metallic Thread Dragon Carpet became the
sleeper of the sale when competitive bidding between a floor bidder and
the phone quickly drove the price to $29,900, well beyond the
$3,000-5,000 estimate.
The sale ended on a high note when the
final lot, a 19th century 13 foot 2 inch x 10 foot 11 inch
Agra Carpet, sold fo
r
$42,550, against a $15,000-25,000. “I am very pleased with the
results,” commented Michael Grogan, President and Chief Auctioneer,
“Almost two thirds of the rugs
exceeded or sold at the high end of their estimates, proving that the
Collectible Rug market is healthy.”
