SEPTEMBER AUCTION GROSSES OVER 1.2 MILLION

September 23, 2007 –  A crowded auction room, a bevy of phone bidders and over 500 Ebay live auction bidders, all contributed to the success of our September Antiques and Fine Art Auction.  The auction grossed over 1.2 million and was comprised of over 550 lots including American and European Paintings, 18th through 20th century Furniture and Decorative Works of Art, Silver, Jewelry and Oriental Rugs and Carpets from local estates and collections.  “The sale included a number of high quality items from many local estates,” commented auctioneer and President Michael Grogan, “which resulted in strong prices across the board.”

The top lot, a magnificent Ladies Yellow Diamond and Gold Brooch, brought $39,100 against a $30,000-50,000 estimate and was comprised of an 11.99 carat Pear shaped Brilliant cut Diamond in a star burst Yellow Gold setting.  The silver offerings included an impressive Pair of George III Silver Wine Coolers.  Estimated to bring $8,000-12,000, the pair sold to an Ebay liveauctions bidder for $18,400.  A phone bidder achieved the second highest silver price for a Paul Storr George III Silver Platter, which fetched $17,250 against a $6,000-8,000 estimate.

Highlighting the Fine Art offerings was an Impressionistic California landscape by venerated American artist, Robert Henri.  Figures on a Beach, LaJolla, California, a 9 x 10 oil on board sold over the phone for $37,375 against a $20,000-30,000 estimate. William Norton’s Barque off Thatcher’s Island, Gloucester, a 16 x 24 inch oil on canvas estimated to bring $10,000-15,000, sold to a private collector in the room for a record auction price of $26,450 for the artist.   One of the surprises of the sale was Russian painter Alexander Hausch’s Venetian Moonlit Scene, which soared beyond it’s $2,000-3,000 estimate to sell to another private collector in the room for $34,500.

Not to be outdone, the Furniture and Decorative arts generated significant presale interest from European buyers.  French furniture brought the strongest prices with a Louis XV Marquetry Inlaid Marble top Ormolu Mounted Bombe Commode selling over the phone to a European collector for $31,625, well above it’s $5,000-7,000 estimate and a Fine Louis XVI style French Marble top Salon Table from a prominent Newport Residence, fetching $29,900 against a $10,000-15,000 estimate.  Two Austrian Cold Painted Bronze Sculptural Lamps depicting Mosque’s, soared well above their $3,000-5,000 pre sale estimates to sell over the phone to another European collector for $24,725 and 25,300.

What makes attending a live auction exciting, is the unexpected. The decorative arts offerings had some nice surprises, including an Unusual Chinese Export Tureen and Under plate estimated in the $1,000-3,000 range, which sold to a phone bidder for $14,950 and a Two Slip decorated Native American Pots with $400-600 pre sale estimates, sold to an Ebay liveauctions bidder for $4,313.   An 18th century Continental Carved Giltwood Mirror estimated to bring $500-700, sold for $3,450 and a Pair of Large Ivory Ground Hispano Moresque style Lustreware Vases, estimated to fetch $400-600, went for $4,600.

A collection of 19 works by artists from the Woodstock Art Colony, Woodstock, New York featured Reginald Wilson’s Quitting Time, which brought $3,450 against a $600-900 estimate and  Lucile Blanches  Seated Woman came in second with a result of $2,185 against a $2,000-3,000 estimate.

All prices include a buyer’s premium.
