AMERICANA OFFERINGS HIGHLIGHT
DECEMBER
AUCTION

Dedham, MA –  On Sunday, December 12th,  Grogan & Company conducted a pre holiday auction comprised of American and European Paintings, 18th, 19th  and 20th century Furniture and Decorative Works of Art, Silver and Oriental Rugs and Carpets.  The sale grossed over 1.2 million in sales and drew clients from around the globe.

The highlight of the fine art offerings was Yacht Race in New York Harbor, by James E. Buttersworth. Rescued from a South Carolina attic just minutes from being sent to the landfill, the 14 x 20 inch oil on canvas sold to a gentleman in the room for $161,000, against a  $100,000-150,000 pre-sale estimate.   A pair of Sheldon Peck Ancestral portraits, circa 1824, brought a respectable $28,750 against a $20,000-30,000 estimate and a finely carved Preening Shorebird, by Anthony Elmer Crowell soared from it’s $15,000-25,000 estimate to sell for $46,000.

The sale included a selection of small decorative items, Fabergé examples, estate jewelry and collectibles.  The second highest price of the sale was achieved by a Fabergé Gilded Silver and Enamel Pictorial Box.  The small box depicting a Viking Ship generated competitive bidding between the floor and the phones before it sold to a gentleman in the room for $69,000 against a $2,000-3,000 estimate.   The same gentleman successfully purchased a Fabergé Smokey Quartz Bonbonniere for $43,125, against a $2,000-3,000 estimate. The highlight of the jewelry offerings was an impressive 7.22 carat Diamond Solitaire Ring estimated at $50,000-70,000.  The large round cut diamond ring, flanked by baguettes, sold for $64,400 to a New York dealer.

The sleeper of the sale was a pair of Federal Carved Mahogany Shield Back Side Chairs, estimated at $2,000-3,000.  Excitement filled the room when several phone bidders competed until they finally sold for $52,900.  An impressive Bigelow Studios Leaded Glass Shade Lamp sold for $13,800 against a $4,000-6,000 estimate and a Viennese Empire Acajou Center Table, circa 1805, brought $11,500 against a $5,000-7,000 estimate.

The sale concluded with a selection of Oriental Rugs and Carpets, including a 12 foot x 10 foot Ziegler Sultanabad Carpet, Persia, circa 1880, which sold for $46,000 to an Italian dealer against a $10,000-1,5000 pre-sale estimate.

All prices quoted include a buyer’s premium.
