BUTTERSWORTH'S SAIL AT OCTOBER AUCTION

Sale 107 - On Sunday, October 15th, Grogan & Company conducted their 107th auction comprised of 450 lots of American and European Paintings, 18th and 19th century Furniture and Decorative Works of Art, Silver and Oriental Rugs and Carpets.   The sale, held in our Dedham gallery, grossed over 1.6 million and was well attended.

“The fine art offerings did exceptionally well,” commented Michael Grogan, President of Grogan & Company.  “Although the painting lots only made up 38% of the offerings, they resulted in 66% of the sale total.”   Two fine paintings by venerated 19th century marine painter James E. Buttersworth brought the highest prices.  The first Buttersworth to sell was an oil on canvas depicting the  schooner Halcyon. The painting sailed well beyond it’s  $60,000-90,000 pre-sale estimate to sell for $230,000 to a phone bidder.  Next, Atalanta Rounding Buoy 8 ½ sold to the same bidder for $264,500, well beyond it’s $80,000-120,000 estimate.  Both paintings were in excellent condition and came from a prominent New England family.

A rare Venetian Scene, estimated to bring $150,000-200,000, by American Impressionist Guy Rose sold over the phone for $161,000.  The small oil on canvas is thought to have been painted in the mid 1890’s, when Rose was embracing the French impressionist movement and producing plein air sketches.
A selection of Modern art from a prominent collection with connections to Arthur Steiglitz’s 291 Modern Gallery in New York did very well.  Fourteen issues of “291”, a magazine published by the 291 Modern Gallery, exceeded their $300-500 estimate to sell for  $5,750 and an Abstract American School painting inscribed Williams and dated 1914, soared to $11,500, well beyond it’s $300-500 estimate.

European offerings included Henri Le Sidaner’s Maison dans la dune, a 21 x 26 inch oil on canvas landscape, which sold for $60,375,  just within the  $60,000-80,000 estimate.  The second highest price for European art was $34,500, achieved by an Italian School Venetian Canal Scene.  Bought by a gentleman in the room, the oil on canvas attracted international pre-sale attention despite it’s  low $1,000-1,500 estimate.  Gohanna with Mr. Thomas Bird, an oil on canvas by English artist John Boultbee, estimated to bring $8,000-12,000, sold for $14,950 and an old master painting of a Bearded Man estimated to sell in the $300-500 range, surprised everyone when the painting sold to a European phone bidder for $8,625.

In addition to the fine art offerings, the auction included a large selection of 17th, 18th and 19th century Continental and English Furniture, Decorative Works of Art and Silver.  The highlight of the decorative arts section was a Rare Tiffany & Company Silver and Enamel Floral Decorated Bud Vase.   The vase, estimated to bring $600-800, sold for an astounding $42,550.  As it turned out, the vase was one of the pieces exhibited by Tiffany & Company at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, the whereabouts of the vase has been unknown until now.

Other highlights included a Louis Solon Pate Sur Pate Mythological Plaque, estimated at $20,000-30,000, which sold for $31,625 and a Newcombe Arts and Crafts Pottery Vase, which sold for $8,912.50 against a $1,500-2,000 pre-sale estimate. The top furniture lot was an Elizabethan Carved Oak and Inlaid Three Tier Court Cupboard, estimated at $5,000-7,000.  The cupboard, just one item from a large estate collection of early English furniture, sold over the phone for $10,925.

The silver offerings included a Set of Four George III Candlesticks which sold for $7,475 against a $6,000-8,000 estimate and the rug highlight was a 19th century Serapi Carpet that fetched $20,700 against a $10,000-15,000 pre-sale estimate.
