RUG SALE TOPS 1 MILLION

On Saturday evening April 22nd, over 300 rug collectors and dealers from across the globe attended Grogan & Company’s  Fine Oriental Rugs, Carpets, Tapestries and Textiles auction. The auction, which topped one million dollars, consisted of 180 lots and lasted two hours.   Almost as impressive as the collection of rugs offered, were the bidders in attendance, a virtual who’s who of the rug world.  A large contingency of prominent collectors and exhibitors attending the American Conference on Oriental Rugs in Boston were treated to a pre-auction reception and included guests from countries across the globe including Turkey, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong and Italy.

The top lot of the auction was lot 110, a Borjalou Kazak Rug, circa 1800 from the Caucasus region.  The 7 foot 3 inch x 4 foot 6 inch rug generated significant interest and competitive bidding between the collectors in the room and several phone lines, before it sold for $69,000, against a $15,000-25,000 pre-sale estimate.   An unusual and exceptional Fereghan Sarouk Runner, once owned by auctioneer Michael Grogan’s great grandfather, achieved an impressive $48,857 against a $10,000-15,000 estimate.  The runner had been sold to a New York family in 1952 when Grogan’s great grandfather, H. Michaelyan, deaccessioned his collection by auction at Parke Bernet.

The sleeper of the auction was lot 106, a very rare Turkoman Ensi,
circa 1800, which far surpassed it’s $1,000-2,000 pre-sale estimate to sell for $40,250 despite it’s poor condition.  A fine and attractive Serapi Carpet, mid-19th century, fetched $37,375 against a $20,000-30,000 estimate, the highest price for a room sized carpet and a fine Brussels Historical Tapestry, from the late16th or early 17th century, depicting the crowning of the infant king sold for $20,700 against a $15,000-25,000 pre-sale estimate.

“This sale was one of the most upbeat, fun filled auctions I have held in years, ” commented Michael Grogan,
President,  “It was a real delight to work with such beautiful rugs and enthusiastic buyers.”
