W.M. HUNT'S
GLOUCESTER HARBOR
ACHIEVES RECORD PRICE
Dedham, MA –
On Sunday, March 12th, a standing room only crowd packed into
Grogan & Company’s Dedham Gallery to compete for over 450 lots of Fine
Art, Antique Furniture and Decorations, Silver, Jewelry and Oriental
Rugs. The sale was a huge success for auctioneer Michael Grogan,
resulting in over 1.2 million in net sales.
The highlight of the sale, Gloucester Harbor, an oil on
panel by 19th century Boston School painter William Morris
Hunt, far exceeded it’s $40,000-60,000 pre-sale estimate to sell for a
record $391,000. Gloucester Harbor, painted in 1877 just three
years before the artists death, closely relates to a similar
example found in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection and attracted
the attention of several prominent New England galleries, collectors and
institutions. “The highest auction price previously listed for a
painting by Hunt is $33,000,”
commented Michael Grogan, President of Grogan & Company. “This painting
is one of the earliest examples of American Impressionism, created at a
time when the Impressionist movement was just blossoming in Europe,
which accounted for the record price,” stated Grogan.
The
second highest price achieved at the auction was a still life, Onions,
by Marc Aurele de Fo Suzor-Cote, a Canadian impressionist painter. The
oil on canvas, which attracted significant attention from Canadian
galleries and collectors, sparked a phone bidding war that drove the
price from the opening bid of $3,000 to $71,875.
The
market for Asian works of art continues to be strong as evidenced by the
strong results of a Pair of Chinese Carved Green Jade Lanterns, which
sold for $24,150 against a $3,000-5,000 estimate and
Pair of Chinese Export Porcelain Dogs which also brought $24,150 against
a $2,000-3,000 estimate. A Fine Japanese Two Panel Paper
Screen from the Edo period, brought $18,975 against a $4,000-6,000
estimate. To add to
the excitement, a small Japanese Carved Wood Figural Group,
estimated at $200-300, soared to $4,600 and a Chinese Silk Needlework
Fan with a carved jade handle, exceeded it’s $200-300 estimate to bring
$4,313.
Other highlights included a fine George III Marquetry Inlaid and Carved
Giltwood Demilune Console Table, 18th century, which exceeded it's
$4,000-6,000 pre-sale estimate to sell for $24,150 and an American
Hammered Silver and Mixed Metal Footed Bowl by Gorham, which sold for
$9,488, well above it's $1,000-1,500 pre-sale estimate. A
set of Georg Jensen silver cordials also exceeded their $300-500
pre-sale estimate by selling for a respectable $5,175.
All prices include a buyer’s premium.
