DEDHAM FIREBUCKETS SOAR AT THE SEPTEMBER AUCTION -
SALE 102
Dedham, MA –
On September 25th and 26th, Grogan & Company
opened the 2005-2006 season with a two-session auction that grossed over
one million dollars in sales.
The highlight of
Sunday’s session was a Pair of Early 19th century Painted
Dedham Fire Buckets, that soared above the pre-sale estimate of
$3,000-5,000 to sell for $14,375. The room erupted in applause when
auctioneer and President Michael Grogan announced that the buckets were
acquired by the Dedham Historical Society. According to Ron Frazier,
Executive Director and CEO of the Historical Society, the firebuckets,
dated 1827 and inscribed M. Gragg, were traced to the former Norfolk
Inn, a historic building located on Court Street once owned by Moses
Gragg.
The highlight of Monday’s
session was a painting by Modernist Spanish painter Antonio Saura.
Fele, an abstraction of black lines on a white canvas, attracted
international attention. Bidders from across the globe competed by
phone and on-line until the painting, finally sold for $80,500 against a
$5,000-10,000 pre-sale estimate. Other Contemporary and Modern
paintings from the Estate of John and Francois Clarens also faired well.

sell to a European phone bidder for $40,250. A Beach scene by American
Impressionist painter, Mabel May Woodward, brought a respectable $25,300
(pre-sale estimate of $20,000-30,000) and early 19th century
edition of Wilson’s Ornithology Plate Book, containing 76 color plates,
sold for $12,075 (pre-sale estimate $1,000-1,500).
