DEDHAM FIREBUCKETS SOAR AT THE SEPTEMBER AUCTION - SALE 102

Dedham, MA – On September 25th and 26th, Grogan & Company opened the 2005-2006 season with a two-session auction that grossed over one million dollars in sales.

The highlight of Sunday’s session was a Pair of Early 19th century Painted Dedham Fire Buckets, that soared above the pre-sale estimate of $3,000-5,000 to sell for $14,375.  The room erupted in applause when auctioneer and President Michael Grogan announced that the buckets were acquired by the Dedham Historical Society.  According to Ron Frazier, Executive Director and CEO of the Historical Society, the firebuckets, dated 1827 and inscribed M. Gragg, were traced to the former Norfolk Inn, a historic building located on Court Street once owned by Moses Gragg.

The highlight of Monday’s session was a painting by Modernist Spanish painter Antonio Saura.  Fele, an abstraction of black lines on a white canvas, attracted international attention.  Bidders from across the globe competed by phone and on-line until the painting, finally sold for $80,500 against a $5,000-10,000 pre-sale estimate.  Other Contemporary and Modern paintings from the Estate of John and Francois Clarens also faired well.  Lester Johnson’s, Broadway Portrait of Jo, sold for $8,050 and Paul Jenkins Phenomena Saracen Banner, sold for $10,350.

The audience applauded as an early 18th century painting depicting a Biblical Scene surprised everyone when it far exceeded it’s $1,500-2,000 estimate to sell to a European phone bidder for $40,250.   A Beach scene by American Impressionist painter, Mabel May Woodward, brought a respectable $25,300 (pre-sale estimate of $20,000-30,000) and early 19th century edition of Wilson’s Ornithology Plate Book, containing 76 color plates, sold for $12,075 (pre-sale estimate $1,000-1,500).

Oriental Rugs and Carpets included a Fine 19th century Serapi Carpet, estimated at $15,000-25,000, which sold for $20,125 and a late 19th century Fereghan Sarouk Carpet, estimated at $5,000-7,000, which sold for $12,075.

Other items of interest included a Piero Fornasetti Four Panel Wood Screen, circa 1950, a highly sought after item sold for $10,062.50, well above the pre-sale estimate of $1,000-1,500 and a Set of Four George III Silver Candlesticks, estimated at $3,000-5,000, brought $13,800. Furniture highlights included a French Provincial Two Drawer Commode, which sold for $5,462.50 (pre-sale estimate: $2,000-3,000) and an 18th century Queen Anne Upholstered Wing Chair, which brought $3,737.50 against a $1,000-1,500 estimate.

A Chinese Export Eagle Decorated Porcelain Tea Set exceeded its $600-800 estimate to bring $6,900 and a large Group of Blue and White Canton Porcelain sold for $3,737.50, exceeding it’s $300-500 estimate.  Asian works of art highlights included a Collection of Jade, featuring a Turquoise encrusted Elephant, which sold for $11,500 against a $1,500-2,000 estimate and Two Peking Glass Bowls, estimated at $300-500, brought $3,220.  A Pair of Massive Bronze Cranes, one of the most unusual lots of the sale, sold for $11,500 (pre-sale estimate $10,000-15,000).

All prices include a buyer’s premium.
