100TH AUCTION A HUGE SUCCESS!

Dedham - On Sunday, April 10th, a standing room only crowd packed into our Dedham Gallery to help celebrate Grogan & Company's 100th sale.  The Centennial Auction included over 450 lots of Fine Art, 18th and 19th century Furniture and Decorations, Silver and Jewelry and Oriental Rugs and Carpets.  To commemorate the milestone, Michael and Nancy Grogan hosted a Friday evening Champagne Reception and Viewing for clients, colleagues and friends with over 100 guests attending.

The highlight of the 100th sale, was ironically lot 100, a watercolor by venerated American artist Andrew Wyeth.  Buoys, expected to fetch $80,000-100,000, realized it’s potential when it sold to a Boston collector for $100,000 ($115,000 including the 15% buyers premium).  The sale, which netted over 1.2 million in sales, also included a Frank Benson watercolor, Swans and Geese in Flight over Marsh, which exceeded it’s $30,000-50,000 pre-sale estimate to sell to a Boston dealer for $103,500.   “I was pleased to see both pictures stay in the Boston area and I appreciated our local buyers coming out and making our 100th sale an auction to remember,”  commented Michael Grogan, President and Chief Auctioneer, “The fact that it was our 100th auction and lot 100 sold for 100,000 was an interesting twist.”

The furniture highlight was a Rare Gothic Carved Oak and Metal Mounted Chest from the 15th/ 16th century.  The chest, on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts European Department since it’s home, Tanglewood, became Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home in 1941.  Estimated at $3,000-5,000, the chest sold for $35,650.00 to an overseas collector.
